Spännande jobb i Karibien :-)

Jag åker till Barbados på söndag! Ja, eller egentligen till London, Heathrow för att där byta till Gatwick, sova över på ett litet kub-hotell på flygplatsen och så följande morgon vidare med Virgin Atlantic till Barbados! Åker som reseledare för Albatros Travel och vi är tre reseledare som ska ta hand om cirka 120 svenska och norska resenärer. Dels övistelse på Barbados, dels kryssning bland några öar.
Bilden och kartan nedan är lånade från Albatros Travels hemsida, där det finns mera information. Det ska bli riktigt kul, och det är också trevligt att vi är flera reseledare som jobbar ihop, oftast är man ju ensam. Givetvis med en chaufför om man har buss, men ensam som reseledare.

Dag 1. Avresa från Stockholm till Barbados
Vi smygstartar sommaren och lämnar Stockholm för en underbar tropisk semester i Karibien. Vi landar på flygplatsen i Bridgetown på Barbados och åker till vårt hotell.
Dag 2. Barfotasemester på Barbados
Vi bor på det härliga fyrstjärniga hotellet Accra Beach Hotel & Spa som ligger direkt på en av Barbados finaste sandstränder och nära både spännande uteliv, shopping och nöjen. Här kan du välja och vraka mellan olika aktiviteter eller avslappning på hög nivå: ta ett dopp i poolen, koppla av och läs en god bok under ett parasoll på stranden, snorkla i det turkisblå vattnet, eller unna dig en lyxig behandling i hotellets spa. På kvällarna kan du njuta av utsökt mat på en av hotellets tre restauranger eller en av de många restaurangerna i området. Ta en drink i hotellbaren och dansa genom den tropiska natten till karibiska rytmer i nöjesområdet St. Lawrence Gap.
Du kan välja mellan standardrum eller juniorsuiter. Alla juniorsuiterna har jacuzzi, antingen på balkongen eller inne på själva hotellrummet.
Dag 3. Halvdagsutflykt på Barbados
Idag är det dags för en halvdagsutflykt till några av Barbados undangömda bukter och stränder. Vi åker runt på ön med en safari-landrover och får chansen att se några av öns äkta strandpärlor.
Barbados välkomnar sina besökare med värme och vänlighet, ett böljande landskap och vita sandstränder. När man ger sig ut på en åktur över ön, upplever man långa alléer mellan sockerrörsplantagernas vajande gröna väggar och i de små byarna ser man gamla anglikanska kyrkor och små färggranna trähus.
Barbados har i dag ca 260 000 invånare. I motsättning till många andra karibiska öar är Barbados inte en vulkanö, utan ett resultat av jordskorpans och havsbottnens rörelser. Skiktet under markytan består av kalksten och man hittade tidigt färskvatten på ön, vilket kom både öns befolkning, sockerproduktionen och grannöarna till godo.
Rom är något som man förknippar med Karibien och Barbados var först ut med produktionen av den högoktaniga. Överallt på ön ligger romfabriker där man kan se hur produktionen går till, höra om rommens historia och naturligtvis provsmaka produkterna.
Dag 4 – 7. Barfotasemester på Barbados
Njut av avspända dagar på Barbados. Reseledaren kommer gärna med förslag på aktiviteter.
Dag 8. Barbados. Ombordstigning och incheckning på Clipper Adventure vid lunch

Vi har tid till de sista upplevelserna på Barbados innan vi stiger ombord på Clipper Adventure vid lunchtid. Det är Albatros Travels eget kryssningsfartyg som vi har helt för oss själva och där vi kan njuta av de spektakulära omgivningarna i den karibiska övärlden. När vi har checkat in äter vi lunch ombord på Clipper och reseledarna håller ett välkomstmöte och ger en rundvisning av fartyget. Det blir dessutom en obligatorisk säkerhetsgenomgång.
Dag 9. Ankomst St. Lucia. Möjlighet till rundtur på ön
Ankomst kl. 08:00. Avresa kl. 14:00
Vi lägger till i huvudstaden Castries som är känd för sin sprudlande marknad, där väldoftande kryddor och tropiska frukter kan köpas i marknadsstånden. Om du vill ha en speciell karibisk upplevelse kan du kika in i en av de s.k. ”rum shops” och provsmaka den lokala varianten av rom. Om du går på en promenad genom staden hör du hur calypso- och reagge-rytmerna strömmar ut från caféer och barer och det är svårt att få en mer karibisk känsla än här! En promenad genom staden bör också inkludera torget Derek Walcott Square, uppkallat efter öns berömde författare Derek Walcott (f. 1930), som fick Nobelpriset i litteratur 1982.
Du kan också välja att följa med på en rundtur på ön (inte inkluderat i priset) och njuta av det vackra landskapet bland orkidéer, vulkaner, gröna kullar och frodiga dalar med de två spetsiga bergtopparna ”The Pitons” på horisonten.
Paradisiska långa vita sandstränder, små hemliga bukter och mysiga fiskebyar avlöser varandra längs kustremsan. Mitt på ön ligger orörd djungel och bananplanteringar. Bananexporten är den största inkomstkällan för St. Lucia, där turismen fortfarande inte har fått övertaget. Först var fransmännen och sedan engelsmännen kolonialherrar på ön, som 1967 blev oberoende och som idag, liksom många andra tidigare engelska kolonier, är medlem av Commonwealth.
Som på många av de andra karibiska öarna finns det en aktiv vulkan på St. Lucia, som ligger på den södra delen av ön vid fiskebyn Soufrier. Här kan man uppleva bubblande lera och en omisskännlig doft av svavel som talar sitt tydliga språk om den vulkaniska aktiviteten. Det finns även varma källor här som man kan ta sig ett dopp i, och de många mineralerna i vattnet sägs göra huden väldigt gott.
Vi återvänder till Clipper för att äta lunch och ger oss sedan iväg mot det lyxiga Saint Barthélemy. Kvällen och natten tillbringas ombord på Clipper Adventure.
Dag 10. Ankomst till Saint Barthélemy på morgonen. Stadsvandring i Gustavia och eftermiddagen på egen hand

Vi lägger till i huvudstaden Gustavia under förmiddagen och ger oss ut på en stadsvandring. Ön är uppkallad efter Columbus storebror, Bartholomeo, och huvudstaden har fått sitt namn efter vår svenske kung Gustaf III.
Idag är Saint Barthélemy känt för sina förstklassiga hotell, exklusiva klientel och franska gastronomi. Ön har nämligen ett förflutet som både fransk och svensk koloni och det franska arvet går igen i menyerna på öns lyxiga restauranger och svenskminnet lever vidare i Gustavias gatunamn – Piteågatan, Kungsgatan, Östra Strandgatan.
Till skillnad från andra karibiska öar har det inte bott karibiska indianer här, och det gick 150 år efter att Columbus upptäckte ön, till att de första franska bosättarna slog sig ned här. Det finns nämligen inga naturliga förekomster av färskvatten på ön och det är endast en väldigt liten del som lämpar sig till lantbruk. Men fransmännen kom på en lite annorlunda, men lönsam inkomstkälla: De gjorde ön till mellanstation för franska pirater.
Gustaf III var väldigt intresserad av att Sverige skulle ha kolonier ute i världen och förhandlade bland annat om både Tobago och Puerto Rico. I juli 1784 uppfylldes hans dröm när den franske kungen gick med på att lämna ön ifrån sig mot att de fick handelsrättigheter i Göteborg, och i början av 1785 kom de första svenskarna till St. Barth. Men tiderna förändrades; svenskarna var efterhand inte längre särskilt intresserade av sin karibiska koloni och 1877 gick fransmännen med på att överta ön igen. St. Barth är än idag under franskt styre och den svenska skattefriheten gäller fortfarande.
När man är på St. Barth kan man som svensk inte låta bli att avlägga ett besök i Marius Stakelboroughs bar Le Select på Östra Strandgatan i Gustavia. Barens väggar är täckta av svenska dekaler, dalahästar och svenska flaggor, samt bilden då kungafamiljen besökte St. Barth 1988. Marius har även fått Nordstjärneordern av kung Carl XVI Gustav för sitt arbete med att stärka banden mellan Sverige och Saint Barthélemy.
Efter vår stadsvandring är resten av dagen på egen hand.
Dag 11. Saint Barthélemy på egen hand

Idag har du chansen att upptäcka St. Barts fantastiska stränder och kristallklara vatten! Men du kan också tillbringa dagen på hotell Carls Gustafs terrass med ett glas champagne i handen - utsikten över hamnen är magnifik härifrån! Eller varför inte prova en av de andra cirka 60 topprestaurangerna som ön kan stoltsera med, som alla är kända för att vara dyra och eleganta, men inte snobbiga, och som serverar mat som får det att vattnas i munnen även på de mest kräsna gourméer. Och om du har tur kanske du får syn på en av alla de världskändisar som har varit här: Pierce Brosnan, Tom Cruise, Celine Dion och Brad Pitt lär alla ha njutit av lata dagar på St. Barth.
Om det finns intresse för det så arrangerar reseledaren gärna olika utflykter, till exempel till en av St. Barths vackra stränder eller till den lilla fiskebyn Corrosol.
På kvällen är det dags att gå ombord på Clipper igen och vi seglar vidare till Tortola, dit vi anländer nästa morgon.
Dag 12. Ankomst till Tortola. Flyg till Puerto Rico på eftermiddagen

Det finns många olika förklaringar på namnet Tortola, som betyder ”turturduva”. Enligt en av dem fanns det många turturduvor på ön när Columbus upptäckte den, en annan är att de holländska kolonialherrarna döpte den till Ter Tholen, efter en ö på den holländska västkusten och att engelsmännen senare förändrade det till Tortola. Idag är ön fortfarande under brittiskt styre.
Tortola är ett sant paradis för seglare och ön har lyckats undvika charter och massturism. Sakta, men säkert har dock allt fler hört talas om hemligheten om Tortolas skönhet och söker sig nu hit för att njuta av den paradisiska naturen.
Om det finns intresse och möjlighet för det, så hjälper reseledaren gärna med att arrangera en utflykt på ön, till exempel till en av stränderna där det finns fina snorkelmöjligheter eller en stadsvandring i staden Road Town.
Efter en dag på denna härliga ö är det på eftermiddagen dags att sätta sig tillrätta på flyget till Puerto Ricos eldiga huvudstad, San Juan.
Vi checkar in på det lyxiga Ritz Carlton i San Juan, och här kan du slappna av i fantastiska omgivningar. Hotellet ligger på stranden i vackra Isla Verde, bara några minuter från det historiska centret Vieja San Juan.
Här finns naturligtvis en inbjudande utomhuspool, fitness-center och möjlighet att koppla av på hotellets spa. Här kan du boka en mängd olika behandlingar, gå i bastu och ångbastu eller jacuzzi. Hotellet har även sitt eget kasino - det största på hela Puerto Rico - och fyra restauranger som serverar utsökt mat i de eleganta omgivningarna, antingen inomhus eller ”al fresco”; med utsikt över den vita sandstranden och Atlantens skummande vågor eller den härliga poolen och trädgården.
Dag 13. San Juan, Puerto Rico. Utflykt till regnskogen El Yunque och stadsrundtur i San Juan
På Puerto Rico möter den avslappnade karibiska stämningen den moderna amerikanska kulturen. Resultatet är en färgstark och unik ö där trendiga restauranger samsas med spanska 1400-tals fort, stora varuhus trängs med frodig regnskog blandat med glittrande kasinon och ljuvliga stränder.
Efter frukost börjar vi dagen med en spännande vandring i El Yunque, Puerto Ricos regnskog. Vår kunnige lokale guide berättar om regnskogens intressanta flora och fauna och på vår vandring genom skogen ser vi förhoppningsvis kolibrier och andra tropiska fåglar.
Efter vår regnskogsupplevelse åker vi tillbaka till hotellet och äter lunch på egen hand (ej inkluderat i resans pris). På eftermiddagen är det dags för en stadsrundtur i huvudstaden San Juan, som består av en ny och en äldre stadsdel.
Den stämningsfulla gamla stadsdelen, Vieja San Juan, täcker över 500 års kolonialhistoria och kännetecknas av smala kullerstensgränder, färgstrålande hus med vackra balkonger, små mysiga torg och en uppsjö av kyrkor. Den äldsta delen av Vieja San Juan gömmer sig bakom en solid stadsmur och bakom muren hittar man åtskilliga byggnader och monument som berättar den spännande historien om San Juan. Merparten av San Juan är mycket välbevarat och många av monumenten är med UNESCO:s lista över världskulturarv, bland annat den imponerande fästningen San Felipe del Morro.
Efter vår stadsrundtur kan du välja att stanna i staden eller följa med tillbaka till hotellet.
Dag 14. San Juan, Puerto Rico. Tid till upplevelser på egen hand och hemresa
Du har tid till upplevelser på egen hand under hela dagen. Kanske du vill göra några sista inköp eller bara njuta av stranden, poolen, spaet, fitness-centret eller restaurangerna på vårt sagolika hotell?
Efter vårt tropiska äventyr tar vi bussen ut till flygplatsen och flyger hem till Stockholm under kvällen.

Dag 13. San Juan, Puerto Rico. Utflykt till regnskogen El Yunque och stadsrundtur i San Juan
På Puerto Rico möter den avslappnade karibiska stämningen den moderna amerikanska kulturen. Resultatet är en färgstark och unik ö där trendiga restauranger samsas med spanska 1400-tals fort, stora varuhus trängs med frodig regnskog blandat med glittrande kasinon och ljuvliga stränder.
Efter frukost börjar vi dagen med en spännande vandring i El Yunque, Puerto Ricos regnskog. Vår kunnige lokale guide berättar om regnskogens intressanta flora och fauna och på vår vandring genom skogen ser vi förhoppningsvis kolibrier och andra tropiska fåglar.
Efter vår regnskogsupplevelse åker vi tillbaka till hotellet och äter lunch på egen hand (ej inkluderat i resans pris). På eftermiddagen är det dags för en stadsrundtur i huvudstaden San Juan, som består av en ny och en äldre stadsdel.
Den stämningsfulla gamla stadsdelen, Vieja San Juan, täcker över 500 års kolonialhistoria och kännetecknas av smala kullerstensgränder, färgstrålande hus med vackra balkonger, små mysiga torg och en uppsjö av kyrkor. Den äldsta delen av Vieja San Juan gömmer sig bakom en solid stadsmur och bakom muren hittar man åtskilliga byggnader och monument som berättar den spännande historien om San Juan. Merparten av San Juan är mycket välbevarat och många av monumenten är med UNESCO:s lista över världskulturarv, bland annat den imponerande fästningen San Felipe del Morro.
Efter vår stadsrundtur kan du välja att stanna i staden eller följa med tillbaka till hotellet.
Dag 14. San Juan, Puerto Rico. Tid till upplevelser på egen hand och hemresa
Du har tid till upplevelser på egen hand under hela dagen. Kanske du vill göra några sista inköp eller bara njuta av stranden, poolen, spaet, fitness-centret eller restaurangerna på vårt sagolika hotell?
Efter vårt tropiska äventyr tar vi bussen ut till flygplatsen och flyger hem till Stockholm under kvällen.

The Sky Is The Limit in Las Vegas
Jag jobbade ju till USA för Albatros Travel här i januari och februari. Några nätter i Las Vegas ingick förstås och det var kul att vara tillbaka.
Jag 'rände' en del här när jag bodde i Los Angeles. Fem timmar med bil var det som krävdes innan man var framme i Vegas.
För 25 år sedan bodde jag bl.a. här, på Circus Circus. Och det gjorde vi nu också :-). Hotellet renoveras som bäst, både nere i casinot och uppe i rummen, men det börjar helt enkelt få en lite bedagad charm.
Det är en stad med gigantiska hotell, casinon utan fönster och klockor, någon form av service och underhållning dygnet runt. Intensivt och mycket. Så pass att de flesta orkar med något eller några dygn och sedan är man nöjd och åker gärna därifrån igen. Men det är kul! Och vibrerande!

En person som har haft ganska stor inverkan på Las Vegas genom decennier är Steve Wynn. Han hörde till dem som började dra igång de stora temahotellen, The Mirage öppnade 1989 och hade en stor skog inomhus och en vulkan utanför. Sedan följde det ena mer spektakulära hotellet efter det andra.
Och nu har Mr Wynn himself istället slagit över till andra sidan - med eleganta men ändå fantastiska hotell. Bilden ovan tog jag från mitt hotellfönster (genom fönstret, du kan inte öppna dem) på 23 våningen tidigt på kvällen, innan mörkret och neonexplosionerna dragit igång (nu är den mesta belysningen LED).

and lots of restaurant options. On the island of Culebra, Playa Flamenco is considered
one of Puerto Rico’s loveliest beaches, with soft, pure white sands that strike a vivid
contrast to the surrounding green foliage; Playa Zoni is also beautiful, and more secluded.
Boquerón Beach, near the charming village of the same name, is more than a mile long, but can get crowded on weekends.

Puerto Rico offers plenty of resorts and hotels, many on or near a beach.
The Horned Dorset Primavera, located in the surfing hotspot Rincon, is one of the most romantic. Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States (U.S. territory) and since 1917 all Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens.
Both Spanish and English are the official languages of the island; however, Spanish is commonly used.
The U.S. dollar is the official currency, though it is commonly referred to as “peso” by the locals.
Puerto Ricans are a blend of Spanish, Taino Indian and African cultures. Puerto Ricans consider themselves Americans, although they don’t usually call themselves Americans. They call themselves Puertorriqueños or Boricuas, and when they say ‘my country’, they are actually referring to Puerto Rico.
The climate on the island is fairly stable throughout the year and averages 82°F. The average temperature is 80-85°F during the day and 70-75°F at night.
Puerto Rico possesses its own Olympic team and competes as an independent nation in the Miss Universe pageant.
Puerto Rico has won the Miss Universe title five times: Marisol Malaret (1970), Deborah Carthy-Deu (1985), Dayanara Torres (1993), Denisse Quiñones (2001), and Zuleyka Rivera (2006). It hosted the Miss Universe pageant in 1972, becoming the first Latin American country to host this competition.
The island comprises 270 miles of beachfront. The variety of beaches is simply overwhelming. From power-like sand beaches to dark sand streches of shoreline.
Puerto Ricans generally greet their family and close friends with a kiss on the cheek. They also consider it respectful to stand very close to someone during a conversation. Hand gestures are an important component of communication to them.
The unofficial mascot of the island is a tiny tree frog called ‘coqui’, that is found only in Puerto Rico. This frog is a cute and popularly loved symbol of the island. Its powerful melodic voice and high-pitched, chirpy song can be heard for miles.
Puerto Rico was discovered by Christopher Columbus, who claimed it for Spain in 1493 during his second voyage to the new world. In 1898, with the end of the Spanish-American War, Puerto Rico became a part of the United States.
Fifty-Five of the Fortune 100 companies and 178 of the Fortune 500 companies operate in Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico houses the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope in the world, measuring one thousand feet in diameter and spanning almost 20 acres. It is also the most sensitive radio telescope in the world. It has the capability of probing objects 10 billion light years away and is the only radio telescope in the world that can accurately predict when and where an asteroid would hit the Earth!
Fifty percent of all pacemakers and defibrillators in the U.S. are made in Puerto Rico.

Bridgetown is a great city for strolling, and the island's many museums are a testiment to Bajans' proud history and sense of identity. Golf and watersports are popular, as are outback tours by horse, on foot, or on an ATV or 4x4.
Barbados Beaches
Surfers flock to Barbados' East Coast for big-wave action, while families prefer the calmer waters of the West Coast; beaches here are typically lined with resorts. Advice for Travelers
Travelers can reduce their risk of infection with dengue fever by protecting themselves from mosquito bites. The mosquitoes that spread dengue usually bite at dusk and dawn but may bite at any time during the day, especially indoors, in shady areas, or when the weather is cloudy.
Travelers should follow the steps below to protect themselves from mosquito bites:
•Where possible, stay in hotels or resorts that are well screened or air conditioned and that take measures such as spraying with insecticide to reduce the mosquito population.
•When outdoors or in a building that is not well screened, use insect repellent on uncovered skin. If sunscreen is needed, apply before applying insect repellent.
◦Look for a repellent that contains one of the following active ingredients: DEET, picaridin (KBR 3023), Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus/PMD, or IR3535. Always follow the instructions on the label when you use the repellent.
◦In general, repellents protect longer against mosquito bites when they have a higher concentration (percentage) of any of these active ingredients. However, concentrations above 50% do not offer a marked increase in protection time. Products with less than 10% of an active ingredient may offer only limited protection, often no longer than 1-2 hours.

•Wear loose, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors.
For greater protection, clothing may also be sprayed with a repellent containing permethrin or another EPA-registered repellent. (Remember: don't use permethrin on skin.)

Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), aspirin-containing drugs, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen) should be avoided because of the possibility of bleeding. Early recognition and treatment of severe dengue (e.g., signs and symptoms consistent with impending blood pressure failure) can reduce the risk of death.
If you return from a trip abroad and get sick with a fever, you should seek medical care right away. Be sure to tell the doctor or other health care provider about your recent travel.

Där kan man bl.a. se några av världens högsta träd. De är inte de största, men de hör till släktet som blir de högsta i världen. Sequioaträden finns alltså i tre olika sorter, varav en sort är de största och de här är de högsta.

Pappersarbete
Pappersarbete och administration hör också till stor del till en rundreseledares vardag. Dels under själva resan med t.ex. vouchers, olika utlägg, insamlande av pengar, sparande av kvitton osv och så förstås själva redovisningen efteråt.
När kvittona och dagarna bygger på hög så blir det en nätt liten uppgift till slut...:-). Och idag har jag tagit mig i kragen och sorterat och redovisat! Tre redovisningar på en gång, pust...

Helg i Romme i Dalarna
Riktigt trevligt gäng, blandat med barnfamiljer, tonårskompisar, sambopar och äldre herrar som åkt mycket skidor. Jag hade ingen kamera med den här gången, så det får bli ett par gamla bilder från mitt förra jobbesök dit.
Resemässa på Östasiatiska muséet i Stockholm
I torsdags var jag en av tre reseledare som höll föredrag om destinationer och specifika resor till dessa, ur Albatros Travels fantastiska sortiment. Åsa höll bl.a. om Sydafrika och Sydostasien, Maria om Indien och jag om USA.
Det var två fulla omgångar och så lite mingel tilltugg, samt möjlighet att boka resor med rabatt, emellan. Riktigt lyckat och jättetrevligt! Jag hade dessutom några av mina resenärer där i de båda omgångarna, så det var jättekul :-).
Vi höll till på Östasiatiska muséet i Stockholm. Albatros Travel har flera fina samarbeten med muséet så det passade utmärkt.

Myter kring bagage - incheckat och carry-on

1. You will be reimbursed for all the items in a lost piece of luggage - It would be nice if this was true but airlines all have the maximum that they will pay per piece of luggage, regardless of the contents. Buy insurance or check your homeowner insurance to see if you are covered, and if possible don't pack your valuables in your checked luggage.
2. If you are connecting to another airline your luggage will automatically be accepted by another - This is not necessarily true when it comes to heavier luggage. If the weight of the luggage exceeds the allowance of your connecting airline you could be charged excess baggage fees, or worse, an airline can refuse to accept the overweight piece completely. If you are traveling on multiple airlines during your trip it is important to check airline baggage policies if your luggage is nearing the accepted limit.
3. Baggage allowances are the same on airlines - Most major airlines have similar policies but low cost airlines run the gamut from generous luggage allowances to as little as 30lbs per passenger. You may not even be allowed to check in excess pieces, and some airlines charge a flat rate per extra checked bag where others may charge for every extra pound or kilogram.
4. If you travel on more than one airline your luggage can be booked through- Outside of the weight of luggage, not all airlines have ticketing/interlining agreements which means you will have to pick up your luggage and check in with the next airline. This is especially prevalent with low cost airlines, but can also occur with major airlines when you are traveling on a short flight with them and then connecting with another airline for the longer flight. For example, if you are traveling with British Airways from Geneva to London Heathrow and then United from Heathrow to Chicago, don't be surprised if British Airways only checks your luggage as far as London. The responsibility for the luggage primarily lies with the airline that tags it, so losing a bag can cost them that bit more if they tag it the whole way through.
5. People won't steal your carry on items - I met a flight a few weeks ago where after all of the passengers had finished deplaning, a laptop computer was discovered to have been stolen on board. Police at the airport filed a report on behalf of the passenger, but it's best to keep your expensive items in view - sacrifice leg room to protect your valuables.
6. Your luggage will automatically get checked through if you are connecting- Usually this is true, but sometimes even a connection on the same airline somehow doesn't link up with your check-in record. Check your luggage tags to make sure all of your flight numbers are there. And if you are connecting with another airline, let the passenger agent know that you are connecting, and ask if your luggage can be checked through to your destination.
7. If you are willing to pay extra fees you can check in excess luggage - Sometimes there are blackouts for excess luggage which can mean no extra bags are allowed to be checked even if you are willing to pay extra. Blackouts can occur for weight and balance reasons, holiday travel restrictions, etc..
8. Only checked baggage will be heavily scrutinized at customs - Carry-on items can also be thoroughly examined. In the past few months a passenger went through customs at the airport I work at and child porn was discovered on his laptop that he had brought as carry on. The customs agent had turned on the computer and examined the contents, and when the offensive material was discovered, the passenger was arrested immediately.
9. If you change airports in the same city your luggage will be transferred for you - Unfortunately, you'll need to tote it with you. London Heathrow and Gatwick are known for this as are other cities with multiple major airports like New York, Los Angeles and Sao Paolo, Brazil.
10. Lost luggage will always be delivered to you when found - An airline will often deliver luggage if it was lost on a domestic flight, but not if it was an international flight. The luggage has to go through customs, and customs may need you to be on premises in case they need to ask you about its contents. Often it will be delivered to you without doing so, but be aware that you can be requested to come into the airport if they so require.

Jag sorterar lite jobbpapper och hittade ett gammalt kvitto som jag hade sparat för att komma ihåg adressen och stället. Det var Waldgasthol St. Kastl, som ligger passligt till ifall man t.ex. är på väg ner till Italien eller nåt annat skoj :-).

Cable Cars i San Francisco. Note to myself
Dagens 'note-to-myself' handlar om Cable Cars i San Francisco.

The San Francisco cable cars run on three routes. Two of them start from the same place at Powell and Market, so be sure you check the sign on the end and get on the right one.
•Powell-Hyde: (blue on the map). Goes from Market and Powell to Aquatic Park., past Union Square, the Cable Car Barn Museum, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Lombard (crookedest) Street, ends at Ghirardelli Square. Look for brown signs on the cars.
•Powell-Mason: (yellow on the map) Goes from Market and Powell to Bay and Taylor Streets, through North Beach and ends near Fisherman's Wharf. Look for yellow signs on the cars.
•California Street: (black on the map) Runs Drumm to Van Ness on California St., through the Financial District, Chinatown, Nob Hill. If you want to ride once just for the fun of it, this is the line to choose because it's less busy. If you want to visit Nob Hill, get off at the top and you'll save your legs a steep climb.
Buy tickets for the San Francisco cable cars at the turnarounds or from the conductor as you board. Your payment is good for only one ride and if you transfer from one line to another, you'll pay again. If you plan to make more than two rides a day, the conductors also sell all-day passes which are also good for the Market Street F-Line streetcar and all the city-run buses. The Muni website says the conductor can make change for only up to $20, so be sure you have smaller bills on hand.
You can get tickets and passes at the attended booths at the turnarounds at Powell and Market (near Union Square) or Hyde at Beach (just below Ghirardelli Square). You also get a 7-day MUNI passport when you buy a San Francisco CityPass, a good deal if you're also going to visit some of the attractions they bundle together.
If you find lots of people waiting, send one person to buy tickets while the rest of your group gets in line. If you plan to buy tickets from the conductor, it's best to have correct (or near-correct) change. As of late 2010, tickets were $5.00 each way (reduced to $2 for seniors over 65 years old and disabled persons, off-hours only). Children under 5 years old ride for free.
Don't despair when you get into a long line waiting to get on. The cable cars look like they don't hold very many people, but in fact they carry about sixty folks each when they're completely packed, so the lines go faster than you might expect.
You can board cable cars at the turnarounds listed above or anywhere you see a brown-and-white Cable Car Stop sign like the one in the picture on this page. Signs that say "do not board" mean it and no matter how much you wave or shout, the cars won't stop there. If you are boarding from a stop, wait on the sidewalk and wave as the car approaches, giving the grip person plenty of time to stop. Wait for the car to come to a complete stop and then board from either side.
To get off the cable car, this isn't a bus. Don't pull the rope (that's the bell rope, exclusively for the grip person's use). Just yell: "Next stop, please," about a block before you want to get off. If you wait too long to ask, the grip person needs some time to bring the car to a halt and he may have to take you to the next stop instead. The cable cars run from about 6:00 a.m. to about 1:00 a.m.
According to a friendly grip person who took time from eating his lunch to answer my question, people in wheelchairs ride the cable cars frequently. You just need someone along to help you get on and off.
On August 2, 1873, the first person to ride a San Francisco cable car down Clay Street was Andrew Hallidie, its inventor. He got the idea after witnessing an accident. A horse-drawn carriage was going up a steep hill when the team faltered and the carriage rolled backward downhill, dragging the horses behind it.
Hallidie's invention changed the way people in San Francisco lived, creating a vital link in the San Francisco transportation system and making it feasible for people to live on steep hills, which until then was impossible. The cable cars were an immediate success and by the 1890s, eight transit companies operated 600 cars on 21 routes covering over 50 miles.
Cable cars remained the primary mode of transportation until the 1906 earthquake, when most of system was destroyed. A municipal railway replaced most lines afterward. The iconic cars are the only vehicles of their kind still in operation and they are designated National Landmarks.
In 2010, the term "gripman" faded into history after being used for 137 years to describe the person who operates the cable car's brakes. When Willa Johnson became the second-ever woman cable car operator on April 12, 2010 , the city officially changed the name of the job to "grip person." Johnson's predecessor Fannie Barnes, retired from active cable car duty in 2002.
